![]() ![]() Brilliant, totally original, and worthy of its title. “The funniest novel I have read, possibly ever. ![]() "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Suspenseful, extremely witty, brilliantly written, unexpectedly hilarious, and a joy from start to finish, The Writing Class is a one-of-a-kind novel that rivals Jincy Willett’s previous masterpieces. As she dissects each student’s writing for clues, Amy must enlist the help of everyone in her class, including the murderer, to find the killer among them. Amy soon realizes that one of her students is a very sick puppy, and when a member of the class is murdered, everyone becomes a suspect. But something is very different about this class-and the clues begin with a scary phone call in the middle of the night and obscene threats instead of peer evaluations on student writing assignments. This semester’s class is full of the usual suspects: the doctor who wants to be the next Robin Cook, the overly enthusiastic repeat student, the slacker, the unassuming student with the hidden talent, the prankster, the know-it-all. Her only bright spot each week is the writing class that she teaches at the university extension. ![]() A reclusive widow, her sole companion a dour, flatulent basset hound who barely tolerates her, her daily mantra Kill Me Now, she is a loner afraid to be alone. Now her former life is gone, along with her writing career and beloved husband. Published at only twenty-two, she peaked early and found critical but not commercial success. Amy Gallup is gifted, perhaps too gifted for her own good. ![]()

That’s when I found another bride’s “something old.” I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress. This author combo hasn’t let me down yet so I’m excited to read more of their work. This is a sweet, funny, heartwarming read and it’s just what I needed during a tough week. The secondary characters are awesome here so I really wish the authors would tell Max’s story and give us more Iris. ![]() It’s a slow burn with a lot of obstacles for the couple so I wasn’t confident this was going to be a true HEA but I enjoyed the ending very much, especially the epilogue. ![]() This book deals with some surprisingly heavy subject matter but handles the topics respectfully while still managing to be a romantic comedy, so this story is the whole package. Reed took some getting used to because he frustrated me to no end at first, but he has his reasons for being so standoffish and he does come around eventually.Ĭharlotte stalking Reed online might have been slightly disturbing if it wasn’t so hilarious but their initial meeting was just so good. Charlotte is wonderfully quirky and immediately loveable. Charlotte and Reed are adorable, separately and together. I probably say this too much but I loved everything about this story. ![]() ![]() ![]() Where do we get the growth?īULLARD: The central bank cannot drive the growth process. There’s not much hope of fully following either of these novels unless you have a PhD in a science. The thing is, Watts is undeniably clever, but he couches his work in so much jargon, in so many lofty concepts, that his work is clearly pitched for specialists over the average reader. Ultimately Echopraxia took all the problems I had with Blindsight and was willing to overlook and inflated them to the point that I could no longer ignore them, actually managing to diminish my opinion of its predecessor in the process. In fact, quite a lot of it feels like descriptions of floating around a spaceship, which isn’t exactly riveting. ![]() The former’s strong suit was a very interesting idea to explore, whereas Echopraxia is less focused in its vision and its story takes a while to coalesce. That issue remains though perhaps not as bad as it was in Blindsight you still get a bit lost in the highfalutin sci-fi of it all, but the writing itself feels a little more polished, mature. ![]() ![]() I said in my Blindsight review that sometimes it felt like a clause was missing-some small but necessary line that would make the scenes flow better. ![]() ![]() ![]() does have a different section of the website called the Review Team, which offers free books in exchange for review. Thus they set off, encounter a couple of characters that give us foreshadowing and a couple that become their travel companions. Amidst their secret suspicions that there is a curse of forgetfulness on the land, they decide to seek out their son, who they can hardly remember. ![]() We pick up in what feels like a historical science fiction Hobbit-town, where a couple is aging, thanks to their neighbors, ungracefully. The novel had enough of this and of other things to make me want to like it, but in the end, I never got there. I would have preferred that it was overdone so that it was more of an experimental novel. But I found that since this aspect wasn’t all in, it felt undone, half-hearted, or like Ishiguro couldn’t quite figure out how to handle it. And in some way we feel this forgetfulness, as readers. Despite its being Arthurian (I am a fan), it was groggy in some of the wrong ways.īecause it’s supposed to be a little groggy, right? We’re witnessing a fog of forgetfulness. ![]() Despite its reputation, it’s flat and flagging. (I’m about to say “despite” a lot.) Despite its cleaness, it felt unengaging and unemotional. The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro-which won a Nobel Prize and is a national bestseller-is not bad, exactly, but it’s also not so good. I hate to be redundant, but once again I find myself having just finished a book, mourning its potential. ![]() |
